COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, extreme draught and floodings, … and many other challenges are impacting our lives and our manufacturing operations. However, it is not all negative. New technologies, methodologies and many lessons learned can be used to further improve our performance as manufacturers and make our businesses more resilient. Ten years after the introduction of Industry 4.0, the European Commission already announced Industry 5.0 characterized by human-centric approach, up-skilling and re-skilling workers and a sustainable and resilient industry. The past decade has seen quite a few use cases for Industry 4.0 implementations. Other presenters at this Summit will provide examples of them, like the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and MES, virtualization, Digital Twins and Machine Learning (ML). However, many manufacturers are still struggling how to leverage MES/MOM (Industry 3.0) or are just starting to discover how Smart Manufacturing can help them to deliver the perfect order. Industry 4.0 visions and strategies are very promising, but the reality of every day manufacturing is challenging. Technology is not the holy grail. It should provide the tools to help us to achieve our business goals. Together, we will look at a method to assess our readiness to leverage those innovative technologies. As ‘big bangs’ normally fail, we will investigate a step-by-step approach to further grow our manufacturing capability maturity, improve our overall performance and create a return on our investments now and in the future.
